Grand Traverse Area Literacy Council

Adult Basic English (ABE)

Since 1995 GTALC tutors have used the LitStart Method to help students improve their reading skills.  LitStart is an exciting approach to tutoring, incorporating portions of the Laubach Method,  used previously.  The ABE program provides assistance in basic reading, writing, and mathematical skills.  It also provides assistance for students needing help with filling out job applications, passing G.E.D. exams or improving reading or writing skills.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Our communty population has become more diverse and many of our new neighbors do not speak English.  For those individuals who are interested in learning English help is available.  ESL tutors do not need to be bilingual.  Instruction is in English and is usually presented in a one-on-one format.  The ESL program provides assistance in English conversation, reading and writing skills.  As part of the ESL program, GTALC also provides tutors for Foreign Exchange Students, upon request. The LitStart Manual also contains much assistance for ESL.

Dyslexia

For an individual with Dyslexia, reading a simple sentence can be a daunting task.  GTALC tutors receive training in professionally developed dyslexia techniques and use these techniques to find a combination of skills to enhance individual student abilities.

Learning Partners

This program is sponsored by the Probate Court Volunteer Services, for at-risk children in the Grand Traverse Area Public and Parochial Schools elementary grades.

GTALC Library

The Council Library is available to tutors and students, and contains multiple levels of reading, math, and ESL materials.
